Most assumed that the Giants would be spending their money on the offensive line. But that is just what happened when the Giants signed Golden Tate to help fill out their receiving corps and give Eli Manning another weapon in the passing game.Tate was one of the players to speak with the media in the round of press conferences that marked the opening of the Giantsr17; off-season program, and he offered insights as a veteran player joining a young locker room. On being a Giantr0;Itr17;s been fun,r1; Tate said when asked what his first week as a Giant has been. He added, r0;Really just trying to focus on how to get to my locker, how to get to the cafeteria, where to park, all the things that will hopefully become natural in a few weeks. Itr17;s been great. You can already tell we have a really, really good, solid locker room. Speaking for receivers, who Ir17;ve spent most of my time with working out and in meetings, those guys have done a phenomenal job of welcoming me, trying to help me with any guidance I need, with living situations, or understanding the material that we have so far. Itr17;s been great. I just look forward to keep building relationships with these guys, because these are the guys Ir17;ll be spending most of my time with over the next four years. We have high expectations for our group individually. Wer17;re just going to work.r1;Tate has only been in the Giantsr17; facilities for four days, but he says that a camaraderie is already forming in the locker room.r0;Just speaking with the receivers, those guys just absolutely welcomed me in. Sometimes, you deal with envy and instant competition within the group. Everyone in the locker room I would introduce myself and right away Ir17;m having chats with guys that lasted two or three minutes, because we didnr17;t have enough time. Thatr17;s just what I can sense after four days.r1;On Saquon BarkleyWhile the Giants signed Tate shortly after trading Beckham, he canr17;t be called a replacement. And after getting to be around the reigning rookie of the year, Tate is impressed.Though where most would be impressed with Barkley the athlete, Tate seems more impressed with Barkley the competitor.r0;I get caught staring at that dude, Ir17;m not going to lie to you,r1; Tate said. r0;This dude is, just over the last four days, over the top competitive, and I love it. Oh, I killed that.r17; We were playing Connect Four yesterday, and he beat me in five tries. I havenr17;t played in a while. I wanted a rematch, and he beat me again. You can see that guy is competitive with everything. It reminds me of a young me. Itr17;s either your17;re competing, or your17;re not competing in everything you do. You can just see it. Hopefully, that catches on to other guys. Wer17;re a team full of competitors. I think itr17;s great, healthy competition that her17;s bringing, and thatr17;s what you want. The guy is obviously a phenomenal talent. I think he has the potential to be one of the best backs to ever play the game. Her17;s bringing the mentality and the mindset that a championship type organization needs.r1;The Giantsr17; players careIt is still just the start of the Giantsr17; off-season program. But while it will take time for the team to get into r0;football shaper1;, Tate says that the receiver room is already in shape. r0;Yeah, I would say thatr17;s usually the case, especially in April [that players always come in wanting to work] but looking at the work ethic and just hearing about what guys were doing before April, what they were doing to get better to come in and give themselves the best chance to compete at a high level. You can tell, for instance, (WR) Cody Latimer, one of the guys I was sitting next to, and her17;s just absolutely worked his ass off this offseason trying to get back. You can just see it in his eyes. Before he does a set of exercises or reps in the weight room, or after he gets done, her17;s like, r16;Ir17;m not playing this year, Ir17;m ready.r17; You can see that fire. Some people you can just see the fire, and thatr17;s what you can see with him, and a few other guys. You can tell that they didnr17;t start working out just on Monday, which tells your r16;give a crap levelr17; is high.r1; After Sundayr17;s Super Bowl IX-esque (in more ways that one) 16-6 loss to the Bears, Vikings receiver Adam Thielen called out Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins. On Tuesday, Cousins agreed with Thielenr17;s observations.r0;I really want to apologize to [Thielen] because therer17;s too many opportunities where we could have hit him on Sunday Kareem Martin Jersey ,r1; Cousins said on KFAN, via Chris Tomasson of the , r0;and postgame when I talk to the media I always say, r16;Hey, until I watch the film itr17;s hard for me to really give you a straight answer.r17;r0;Well, now itr17;s Tuesday night. Ir17;ve watched the film and the reality is there were opportunities for [Thielen]. The one thatr17;s most obvious is the third-and-10 at the beginning of the game. Wer17;re near midfield. Thatr17;s arguably seven points. If you put the ball where it needs to be her17;s shown . . . that he will make that play and her17;ll probably finish the play in the end zone and pull away from the defender.r0;Adamr17;s not just a really good player or one of the best players on the Vikings, her17;s one of the best players in the NFL, one of the best players in the world, period, regardless of position. And so we want to, we need to, I need to get him more opportunities. Get him the football.r1;The Vikings have tried to create greater balance this year on offense, but theyr17;ve leaned too much on the run. With Cousins, Thielen, and largely-forgotten Stefon Diggs, the Vikings can and should be throwing it more. And Cousins needs to be throwing it better, when itr17;s time to throw it.
