U podstaw Konstytucji Republiki leżą wartości demokracji, wolności, równości. Prezydent Republiki, wybierany co siedem lat przez Parlament, jest głową państwa, reprezentuje narodową jedność, a także nominuje szefa rządu. Rząd ma charakter parlamentarny. Poprzez głosowanie w wolnych wyborach, ludność głosuje na różne partie polityczne, wybierając jednocześnie właściwych przedstawicieli do Parlamentu.

Władza ustawodawcza należy do Parlamentu, złożonego z Izby Deputowanych oraz Senatu. Posłowie i Senatororwie wybierani są co pięć lat. Władza wykonawcza należy z kolei do rządu, uformowanego z premiera (który pochodzi z jednej z partii) oraz ministrów, których on sam wybiera spośród posłów i senatorów partii większościowych.

Głównymi partiami włoskiego życia politycznego w okresie powojennym były: Demokracja Chrześcijańska, Włoska Partia Socjalistyczna, Włoska Partia Komunistyczna, Włoska Partia Socjalidemokratyczna, Włoska Partia Republikańska, Włoska Partia Liberalna. Gospodarka regulowana jest przez Parlament.
